Character Analysis: Marty from Grease by Td Simons

‘Freddy My Love’ is sung by the character Marty from the musical Grease. Marty is the ‘beauty’ in the group the pink ladies. She is a senior in high school, but she looks older. However, her true age is revealed when she opens her mouth attempting to be sophisticated. Marty feels insecure about herself, so she goes for men overseas who desperately want a woman to write to. To continue this type of relationship Marty asks her men to send her gifts (preferably expensive ones). If the Pink Ladies were asked to describe her, they would say that she is one of their best friends, very pretty, goes for older men, and loves her expensive “gifties”. Marty loves her friends, and finds them helpful when she is in a 'love-struck' situations. No one has a strong antipathy (or love) towards Marty and the feeling is mutual. During Freddy My Love Marty is singing about Freddy Strulka who is her lover that sends her extravagant gifts from all over the world while at war. She loves that Freddy sends her gifts, but she is not truly in love with him. Since Marty is just a teenager, she is oblivious to the fact that Freddy actually cares for her and loves her.

Ten words that describe Marty: boy-crazy, girly, needy, ditzy, selfish, materialistic, outgoing, pretty, bubbly, friendly
